Rear-end auto collisions happen every day in Maryland and elsewhere across the country. While many of these car accidents are relatively minor in nature, even minor incidents can cause injuries that can be felt for a lifetime. Whiplash is said to be the most common injury following a rear-end crash, and the damages sustained from this type of injury can be debilitating.
Whiplash, also known as a neck sprain, occurs when one’s neck is swiftly forced backward and then forward, which occurs when one’s vehicle is struck from behind. This causes the muscles, ligaments and soft tissues in the neck to stretch beyond what they are intended to, causing pain and various other issues. Some of these include:
- Headaches
- Back, neck, shoulder pain
- Dizziness
- Muscle tightness or spasms
- Nerve damage
The severity of whiplash injuries may not always be immediately apparent. In fact, it can take days or even weeks for the full effects to be seen or felt. Seeking medical treatment as soon as possible is advised, as early treatment is certainly beneficial. Whiplash injuries may be diagnosed via X-ray, CT scans or even MRI testing. If any problems are found, common treatments include use of a cervical collar, pain medication, physical therapy and — in severe cases — surgery.
While a neck sprain may not seem like a big deal in the very beginning, it can make going about one’s personal and professional life challenging. Those in Maryland who have suffered whiplash injuries in rear-end car accidents may have legal recourse. Relief for any documented damages may be sought by filing a personal injury claim in court. If negligence can be proved, a monetary judgment may be granted.
